  • The height of summer is upon us. For most of our readers - this means hot weather and (at least in the US) I think most everyone is getting their fair share of the heat.

For those of you that rely on air conditioning to beat the heat, BEI lists several of the top name air conditioner manufacturers among our customer list. So rest assured that we are doing our best to help make the products that help keep you cool. So, search out a cool glass of lemonade, relax for a moment and enjoy this month's news.

    Have You Heard?

Usually I like to feature a particular product, service, or piece of technical information to open the newsletter. This month, however, we have some company news that I'd like to share.

BEI Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: BEIQ) and Schneider Electric SA (Euronext: SCHN) announced that they have reached a definitive agreement for Schneider Electric to acquire all of the outstanding shares of BEI. In our press release announcing the transaction, here's what our Chairman of the Board and CEO, Mr. Charles Crocker has to say.

"We believe that the combination of BEI and Schneider Electric will further strengthen BEI's platform and create significant new opportunities to accelerate sales and marketing, technology, research and development, and expansion of sensors-based products in the marketplace."

I would like to take the opportunity to say thank-you to all of our existing customers and to welcome any new customers. We look forward to continuing to serve your sensor needs. Click on the link, below, for the complete story.

    Mystery Quotes
This month I thought you'd enjoy a little mystery. The following quotes are from a very well known person. This person is famous for contributions in the field of science - but is also well know for a humanitarian point of view. Read the quotes - and take a guess who it is before you click the link below.

"All of us who are concerned for peace and triumph of reason and justice must be keenly aware how small an influence reason and honest good will exert upon events in the political field."

"Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves."

"A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depend on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving."

    Can You Solve This?
We recently had an anxious caller who said his system kept receiving too many pulses from the encoder. He acknowledged that he was working in an electrically noisy environment - but he was using an encoder with complements and was using a differential receiver for the signals.

We determined that he was operating at 5 volts and was running moderately long cable runs - about 100 feet, both of which could be contributors to the problem. He also mentioned that the problem was intermittent, a fact that caused us to ask one more question about the type of output driver he was using with his encoder. What was that question?

Answer: We asked if he was using a differential line driver on the encoder output. It turns out he was using an open collector output with internal pull- up resistors. This meant that the output impedence was different in the High and Low signal states.

This impedence difference meant the data signals had different noise susceptibilities. This, in turn, implied that noise on the data lines was not entirely common mode and would not be rejected cleanly by the differential receiver. Once we switched his encoder over to a true differential line driver output - the problem went away.

    The Wisdom of Children
Often the simplistic view of children hits very close to the truth. Check out these insights from kids into the world of love and marriage.

"Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough." Lynnette, age 8

"Tell your wife that she looks pretty even if she looks like a truck!" Ricky, age 7

"The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them.... It's the right thing to do." Howard, age 8
