I hope you all are having a great summer so
far. At BEI we want everyone to be safe while
they enjoy the summer months so we've
investigated the top hazards of summer and
have compiled a list for you as follows:
In order, the top summer hazards are sunburn,
bug bites/stings, heat illnesses,
burns, foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions
to plants and poisonings (especially children).
So make the most of the outdoors, but be on
the alert -- use your sunscreen, keep
an eye on the kids and don't stand too close to
the barbeque. Enjoy your summer and enjoy
this newsletter - preferably while sipping a cool
lemonade in the shade.
Take a Fresh Look
We've added so many new items and
capabilities in the last several months I wanted
to take the opportunity to refresh you on a
couple of them -- especially since we've got
recently updated information.
First of all, if you haven't checked out our
crossover pages lately, you'll find that they are
greatly expanded from what they were before.
We've doubled the list of encoder sources
where we can offer a replacement. We also
have about 150 different model number
families listed that we can crossover. The
bottom line - if you need to replace an
encoder, anybody's encoder, odds are that we
can provide a match that you can count on.

Our product offerings have been expanded as
well. You can click on the link, below to see
the new sections: metric encoders, linear
encoders, digital displays and our newest
addition: Encoders for Harsh Environments.
Under the last category, you'll find listing to
address your most difficult design challenges.
Oilfield applications, washdown environments,
explosive environments and high shock and
vibration requirements. So take a fresh look -
you just might find a solution you've been
looking for.

"The optimist proclaims that we live in the best
of all possible worlds; and the pessimist fears
this is true" -- James Branch Cabell
Though James Cabell is not a household
name - as an author he influenced a number
of literary legends: Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken,
Sinclair Lewis and Robert Heinlein to name a
few. In fact, when Mark Twain died, he was
reading
Cabell's "Chivalry"
Cabell was born in 1879 and lived most of his
life in Virginia. He spent part of his career as a
reporter in New York City and also worked for
his uncle as a clerk in a coal mining operation
in West Virginia.
James Cabell died in 1958 and left behind 52
books, including novels and short stories. To

Can You Solve This? |
 |
Some problems are more straightforward than
others. Fortunately this one had a ready
solution. The customer in question had a
particularly nasty environment that included
shock and virbration as well as exposure
to the elements. The encoder was installed on
a piece of agricultural equipment.
As you might know, this type of equipment
is often run 16 to 24 hours a day for weeks on
end and then it sits for months out in the
weather -- often partly submerged in muddy
water. Encoders were plagued with broken
couplings and moisture intrusion. What to do?
Answer: The answer to this problem lies with
our newest encoder family, the ES Series.
These encoders use a powerful magnetic hub
to couple the encoder to the measured shaft.
This is a non-contacting coupling method that
provides both mechanical isolation (no
couplings to break) as well as environmental
isolation (IP67+). Switching to an ES20
encoder solved his problem.
