  • Hope you all survived the change to Daylight Savings time. While our inner clocks readjust and before Holloween descends, take a moment to enjoy this month's newsletter.

One of the recent accomplishments at the Industrial Encoder Division of BEI is that we are now ISO registered to the latest standard ISO9001:2000. In addition we have also acheived ATEX approval which applies to those products of ours that are used in explosive environments. Two more ways to serve you better!

The Right Tool for the Job? Absolutely!

The next time you need to measure absolute rotary position, and you've only got a few inches of shaft length to work with - consider the HS35 Absolute Encoder.

Just like it's incremental counterpart, the HS35 Absolute Encoder can clamp directly to shafts from 1/2" up to 1" in diameter. A wide variety of tethering options also means that you can secure it to just about any common motor frame or type.

Download the PDF below and get more details on this versatile and unique hollow shaft absolute encoder.

"I'm not smart. I try to observe. Millions saw the apple fall but Newton was the one who asked why." -- Bernard Mannes Baruch

Bernard Baruch advised American presidents on economic matters for over 40 years. These ranged from Woodrow Wilson to John F. Kennedy. In his later years Baruch was highly regarded as an elder statesman.

He was described as a man of immense charm who enjoyed a larger-than-life reputation that matched his considerable fortune.

BEI encoders were being used in a custom installation where 20 encoders regulated the opening and closing of roof sections on a domed stadium.

Everything worked fine for about a year. Then the stadium maintenance crew began to notice that when it rained and for a relatively short period afterwards, the system went bonkers for awhile and then returned back to normal afterwards. What was going on?

Answer: Close inspection of the cable assemblies to the encoders revealed a "home-built appearance" with a neoprene boot protecting the cable connections. The neoprene had cracked as it was subjected to intense sunlight. Once the customer replaced these cables with BEI custom cables (with a UV rated overmolded backshell), the problem was solved.

    The Lighter Side
How many Support staff does it take to change a light bulb? "It's in the manual. Didn't you read the manual?" -- "The bulb was fine; you just forgot to turn the switch on." -- "The light bulb doesn't work? You must be using a non- standard socket." -- "Well, we have an exact copy of your light bulb here and it seems to be working OK. Can you be more specific about the exact problem?" -- "Our engineers are busy at the moment... We have assigned query number 9257632 to your question. Please refer to it in all future correspondence."
