Dear Reader,
BEI Black CatMany thanks to those of you who wrote to me after last month's newsletter to point out that the day of minimum daylight (solstice) is in late December, not March as I had indicated - oops.  It's nice to know I have such an alert readership.

Autumn is upon us and many will be enjoying Halloween (or similar celebrations) this week.  Costumes, spooky stories, and treats are in store for participants.  Here's hoping that you aren't experiencing any "spooky" occurrences with your control systems and, if you are, give us a call and we'll "treat" you to our applications support.  As for the "costume" part - you're on your own.
When You're in a Hurry
BEI Encoder Hollow Shaft Many of you already know about our Express Encoder (R) line of optical encoders - but did you know they are now available for purchase on-line?  That's right, we've added a new section to our web site with a front page link that lets you quickly specify and order any of our six most popular model series in either incremental or absolute versions.

All Express Encoders(R) ship in three business days or less and some of our most popular models are on the shelf for same day delivery (for orders received by 2 PM Pacific Time, Mon-Thurs).  To make your job easier. we also have 3D CAD links, so you can just drop the encoder directly into your drawing.

And just to make it easier on your budget, we also pay the freight for continental US addresses with 2nd day shipment.  To see if our Express Encoders are right for you, click the picture link, above and check them out.  You'll be glad you did.

Superstitious?
BEI BatsHalloween has a way of bringing out the superstition in people.  Understandably, there are a lot of charms and anecdotes designed to ward off evil spirits, commune with the dead, and make sure you avoid unwanted curses. Here are a few examples of the kinds of dark magic to be found this time of year:

  • If you hold your breath while you drive by a cemetery, evil spirits can't enter your body.
  • Never slam a door. You might hurt a ghost, who'll haunt you for the rest of your life.
  • If you hear 3 knocks and no one is there, it usually means someone close to you has died.
Should you find yourself needing to interpret signals from "beyond this world", or having to summon up a protective charm, then just click on the bats, above.  There, you should find just the right combination of rules, rituals and charms to keep you safe - at least for another year.
Can You Solve This?

BEI light bulb skullThis recent challenge was a little unsettling.  We received a phone call from a fellow who identified himself only as I.M. Dedman who listed his occupation as "building inspector".  Apparently he was using a strange apparatus of his own design.  It involved a specialized rotating scanner mounted to a tripod.  This scanner was controlled by an incremental encoder and was placed in the middle of a large, unoccupied building to do its work.  Apparently abandoned mansions were his specialty.  As the scanner rotated through it's programmed sequence it detected "disturbances" in the local atmosphere.  Because the "energy patterns" of humans would confound his detector, Mr. Dedman was obligated to be outside the mansion monitoring the equipment while it was working.  This involved running several hundred feet of cable through doors or windows which could create "energy leakage paths".  What was a building inspector to do?

Answer:  Fortunately for Mr. Dedman, the Swiftcomm Wireless Encoder Interface was just the trick to solve his problem.  By connecting his encoder to the Swiftcomm transmitter and locating the Swiftcomm receiver outside the building he could transmit the encoder signals wirelessly and capture the "disturbances" he was inspecting for.  The system worked flawlessly and the last we heard Mr. Dedman.
Boo to You
In the history of this season, carving of root vegetables, all types of gourds and even melons has been a part of the Halloween celebration.  In typical 21st century fashion, high technology tools and advanced techniques have invaded the pedestrian world of pumpkin carving elevating it to a high art.BEI Pumpkin Skull

One example is shown in the picture at right.  Yes that is a real pumpkin carved by a real person.  You can click on the picture and you'll be spirited away to the Masterpiece Pumpkin web site where you can feast your eyes on a variety of similarly intricate and amazing works of art.  Check out their gallery of portraits, logos, or their various "theme" pumpkins.

Be warned - you may be tempted to take up the challenge to create your own pumpkin masterpieces!

Thanks for reading our special edition Halloween newsletter.  If there is anything we can do to help shake the demons out of your system installation, or take a curse off of a particular piece of equipment, just give us a call at 1-800-ENCODER and we'll do our best to get you up and running before you can say BOO!
Thanks for reading,
